Journeys in Eder D'Uru
« on: July 10, 2009, 06:03:31 PM »

Hi all.  This thread is to discuss the guild's participation in a sim-wide event called the Summer Journey.  I've already spoken with a few of you about this, but let me just start from the beginning for everyone's sake.

I've been making fun little journeys at Eder D'Uru since February when I created the first one for Dagda's birthday party.  This one involved the guests walking through giant books with covers from the books he'd read in the Uru Book Club, some of which had small scenes from the book or simply led to the next section of the journey.  This journey included a walk through "The Restaurant at the End of the Universe," a space ship ride, telling Hal 9000 to "open the bay doors," a jump through a fissure and a fall to the desert floor, and a giant wurm jumping out of a book.  All of which led the guest to a book-shaped dance floor.
I had so much fun making that one and received such positive responses to it, that I made a small one for St Patrick's Day which included several cliches including shamrocks, kissing the Blarney Stone, a leprechaun, a rainbow and a pot of gold.  For this journey, I had the visitor pick up a green hardhat at the Post Office to wear throughout the journey (because the cavern is a dangerous place, you know) and the hat was scripted to drop gold coins on them when they touched the pot of gold.

Thus began the series of monthly or holiday-related mini-journeys, each of which had their own special hard hat, began at the Post Office, were mostly silly and often included silly gifts and prizes along the way or at the end.
The April Easter Journey involved the visitor teleporting to several locations in the cavern and on the surface to find various eggs (a dodo's nest on top of the arch, a giant egg-shaped swing in the Great Shaft, recently hatched baby chicks and their shells in the barn, a giant chocolate egg, etc.) until they found the gold one at the end which held their prize.
The May/Mother's Day Journey was more elaborate, included a real puzzle, and focused on Ti'ana.  There was even rain in the desert the last week of April to promote it, and the desert was filled with tiny blue flowers for a time.  This one turned out to be quite popular.
The June (Father's Day) Journey went back to being silly, but still included a puzzle and clues.  This one had a fictional character, "Emmett Dale" give the visitor a tour of the town on the surface and request assistance in picking up trash along the way.  When clicked, the trash dispensed either a document with a clue about how the town's name evolved from Lords Valley to Mallards Joint or an item typically associated with Father's Day gifts (socks, tie, cologne, golf balls, etc.).  If the visitor could crack the code to enter the barn, they got the final prize which was a riding lawn mower.

So, that's the "brief" history of the Eder D'Uru journeys and right now, I'm working on the Summer Journey (Jul 15 - Aug 31) which focuses on the residents at Eder D'Uru.  I asked each of the residents who wanted to participate to send me a notecard with information about themselves, both in Uru and SL.  Just something to introduce themselves to the visitor and maybe let them know something about this person's time in Uru, etc.  Then, I take snapshots of the resident, make cut outs which when touched will "speak" and tell the resident's story.  Some of the residents are giving away items, too.
Several ideas were tossed around this afternoon when I met with Ghaelen, Jane and Ruby - almost enough to create an elaborate journey just for the GoH Retreat.  So, I'd like to suggest that we put a lot of those ideas on the back burner for now, let them simmer, and consider creating a journey or journeys just for the GoH.  But, for now, with deadline looming, let's keep it simple and just focus on introducing the visitor to the guild, the retreat and some of the members.  The best ideas I heard today were:
  • A Ghaelen cutout to welcome the visitor, give a brief history of the guild and the retreat and hand out a notecard about the meditations.
  • An Indigo cutout to greet the visitor on one level of the treehouse, tell them she was known as Jane in Uru and offer the visitor some of her famous "feel good" brownies.
  • A Ruby cutout to welcome the visitor to the CCNE and give them a notecard with additional information about it, a LM to her shop, etc.
  • A Ktadhn cutout to greet the visitor in the glass house, say that he's also known as Lord Chaos, and tell about musical events planned for the retreat.

All thoughts and ideas are welcome.

Note: Because this is just a one time event, at first, I thought I might just put this in the Retreat Experiences thread, but, then I thought perhaps we could use this thread to plan guild-specific journeys, too.

Wow, Tai, that's a neat history.  I'm glad you posted all of that.

I'm free of visitors again, and I think I've even recovered.  I shall take your advice and keep my write-up short.  We don't have much history to write about anyway, but for that here and at the retreat.  So, we'll see what comes of it.

The Healers are a group of creative folks, yes...  We do have a lot of ideas. laugh

Not sure what to say, but I'm sure it will make sense to someone when I finally say it.

Now if I could just meet that person.
